What We Do
Over eight decades, the Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs has brought together Canadians to convene in open, inclusive discussion with leading intellectuals, opinion-makers, national leaders, politicians, cultural icons, policymakers, artists, scientists, and diverse experts from Canada and around the globe to discuss and debate the central issues and policy challenges of our times. These exchanges are at the heart of a vital and inclusive democracy. All of our events underscore a belief in the importance of thoughtful, informed exploration of the issues shaping our world. From the annual Summer Conferences on the shores of Lake Couchiching in Ontario, to year-round programs such as the Couchiching Conversations and Roundtables taking place in communities across Canada, as well as our award for excellence in Public Policy Leadership. Awarded at our annual Summer Conference, recipients give testimony to the relevance of vibrant ongoing conversation on policy alternatives and the salient issues of our lives.
The Institute also provides scholarships for students, volunteers, and emerging leaders to attend and experience our summer conferences. Throughout the year we actively reach out and promote access and broad participation to all of our programs. Central to this effort is the cultivation of youth (hyperlink) and young professional programming, new partnerships (hyperlink) and the enhancement of our social and new media interface. The institute also broadcasts, records, (hyperlink) archives (hyperlink) and publishes (hyperlink) many of its proceedings so a wider public can experience and enjoy its substantive programs.
As Canada’s oldest and most celebrated public affairs forum, the Couchiching Institute recognizes the boldness, commitment, and far-sighted leadership of individuals engaged in the formation of public policy in Canada, often in the face of adversity and opposition, by conferring the Couchiching Award for Public Policy Leadership. Awarded at our annual Summer Conference, recipients give testimony to the relevance of vibrant ongoing conversation on policy alternatives and the salient issues of our lives.
There is always room for healthy robust debate on public affairs and the Couchiching Institute serves to make that room.
