Flooding In First Nations Communities in Canada

Dr. Shirley Thompson, associate professor with the Natural Resources Institute at the University of Manitoba will lead a conversation about flooding in First Nation communities. She will present a case study on work she has done with the Lake St. Martin community in Manitoba. By raising awareness of the issue of flooding and strategies to promote effective change, she will suggest solutions and ways that can benefit residents of affected communities.

About Dr. Shirley Thompson

Dr. Shirley Thompson is an associate professor with the Natural Resource Institute at the University of Manitoba. Passionate about her work, Dr. Thompson has done multiple workshops about communities affected by flooding. She strongly believes that flooded communities do not get enough media attention and the issue should be addressed. Dr. Shirley Thompson interest is in changing approaches to re-building communities affected by flooding. She has worked extensively with the community of Lake St. Martin in Manitoba. She received a M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering, at the University of Toronto in 1993
 and her Ph.D. in Adult Education, Community Development and Counselling Psychology, at OISE/University of Toronto in 2002. Widely published, her interests include environmental service delivery, food security and the social economy as well as waste management.
