The CBC: Past, Present, and Future, if any

One year after CBC’s 75th anniversary, Couchiching Toronto Conversations invites you to reflect on the myriad of challenges that the public broadcaster faces in today’s borderless Internet world. Long considered a pillar of Canada’s cultural life, CBC finds itself struggling today under budgetary pressures, political pressures, and the old dilemma of creating original Canadian content that can compete with shows from our neighbor to the south. In light of concerns that the CBC is losing touch with younger Canadians, is it time for the broadcaster to follow in the way of private stations? Does the CBC represent a sort of cultural elitism that no longer resonates among the Canadians of today? These and many other questions will be taken up by Eric Koch, who will draw on his distinguished 35-year career with the CBC in reflecting on the future of the CBC and public broadcasting in Canada.

About Eric Koch

Eric Koch began his distinguished 35-year career with the CBC’s International Service in 1944 as a producer. An author of numerous books of fiction and non-fiction, he also writes a daily blog—Sketches— Koch also spent eighteen years as contract professor in the Social Science Division of York University in Toronto. Eric has been an active member of the Couchiching Institute for over half a century. Born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, in 1919, he left for England as a refugee in 1935, where he attended St. John’s College, Cambridge. In May 1940 he was interned as an “enemy alien” and later shipped to Canada. He was released in 1941 and continued his studies at the University of Toronto.
