Join us for the Thonsur Memorial Lecture on Tibetan Self Immolation: Shedding Light on China’s Rule in Tibet with Dr. Tsering Shakya.

This event is organized by a member of the Tibetan-Canadian community in association with Amnesty International and the Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs. The Thonsur Memorial Lecture is in memory of Thonsur Lobzang Tenzin.

 

About Dr. Tsering Shakya

Dr. Tsering Shakya is the Canada Research Chair in Religion and Contemporary Society in Asia, at the Institute of Asian Research, at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Shakya is a renowned scholar on both historical and contemporary Tibet. He is also an independent consultant and a widely respected analyst, regularly invited to advise Western governments on Tibet/China policy.

Born in Lhasa, he fled to India with his family after the Chinese invasion. He then won a scholarship to study in Britain, and later graduated from London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) with a B.A. Honours in Social Anthropology and South Asian History. He received his M.Phil. in Tibetan Studies in 2000 and Ph.D. in June 2004.

His book The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947 (Pimlico, London 1999) was acclaimed as “the definitive history of modern Tibet” by The New York Times, and "a prodigious work of scholarship” by the UK’s Sunday Telegraph.
